Practical example
A 4000 × 3000, 4.8 MB JPG can be limited to 1920 × 1440 and encoded as WebP. The result card reports its actual size and percentage rather than promising a fixed reduction.
Formula and explanation
The image is scaled proportionally to fit inside both maximum dimensions and is never enlarged. Output quality affects JPEG and WebP; PNG uses lossless browser encoding and can remain larger for photographic content.
Changing to WebP often helps web photographs, while PNG is appropriate for transparency and sharp graphics. JPEG has broad compatibility but replaces transparency with white in this workflow.
Canvas encoding removes embedded metadata. Results vary with image complexity, so a negative reduction is shown honestly if the chosen format makes the file larger. Processing and previews stay local.
